Whenever we think of Rajasthan, yellow sands, intricate architecture, and beautiful and colorful clothes come to mind. Rajasthani Dress for Women
The traditional Rajasthani dress for women is ghagra, choli (also called kanchli or Kurti), and odhni. Ghagra is a long skirt, embroidered and embellished, available in a variety of colors, prints, and fabrics such as silk, cotton, georgette, and crepe. Among all prints, laharia, bandhej, chundri, and mothra are the most popular. To give a beautiful look, antique borders and Jaipuri Gota-patti work are added inside the ghagra.
Kanchli, choli, or Kurti is the
shirt. These are beautiful and well designed and made to the exact size. For
tribal, they are decorated with mirror work, beads, and sequins, coral and
shells, and carving work. Odhni, or chunar, is a long cloth, and is worn as a
cover. It is made up of printed fabric or heavy embroidery, it is decorated
with beautiful embroidery, beading, or other decorations. There are different
ways to wear it, but the most traditional way is to throw one part into a
ghagra, placing the middle part over the chest and pulling the end part over
each shoulder and on the head, covering it with good. Also, various necklaces, such
as Jadau ornaments, aad (chokers), and Raani Har (navel-length necklaces) are
worn around the neck, especially by women from wealthy families.
Rajasthani Dress for Men
Among the Rajasthani
dresses, Pagri is one of the most important parts of men's clothing
as it defines their social and economic status. Their color, fabric, design,
and shape - everything represents each person. Pagri is eight inches wide and
about eighty feet long. A commoner wears one color of Pagri while a rich person
wears a designer of many colors of Pagri. Although people wear special Pagris
during festivals or events. The shape and size of Pagris vary from region to
region. The pagris of Udaipur are flat and the men of Jodhpur wear safa with a
curved bend. In Jaipur, people prefer angular Pagri.
The upper garment is called Angrakha
which means to protect the body, Angrakha is cotton. At festivals, people wear
colorful angrakhas. They are made in two ways; frock-style Angrakha dress with
knee length Angrakha. Printed Angrakhas are more popular in the Rajasthan
market.
Dhotis or pajamas are used to cover
the lower body. The people of Rajasthan usually wear cotton dhotis. For special
occasions, they choose silk or one with a Zari border or embroidery.
